The formula of ice loads is introduced based on International Association of Classification Societies polar class. The theoretical basis of the rules is studied in terms of the calculation of normal force, the ice-ship interaction form, the crushing pressure-contact area ralationships, class factors and hull area factors. Considering the present situation of Arctic shipping and Arctic development, the necessity of conducting a research on the rules of polar surface naval ship is presented. The shortcomings of the existing rules are validated. Finally, the direction of the rules of polar surface naval ship is pointed out.
